ZEN BUDDHISM AND PSYCHOANALYSIS by Erich Fromm, D. T. Suzuki and Richárd De Martino The mutual fascination between Western psychoanalysis and Eastern Zen is now no longer a matter of intefest only to the scholars, and the work of Erich Fromm is recognised as seminal among contemporary efforts to resolve what he calls 'today's spiritual crisis'. Fromm's great achievement in the essay published here is his evolution of a language to reveal the contributions of Zen and psychoanalysis to man's 'struggle to be fully born'. Erich Fromm Author of The Fear of Freedom and many other works, studied sociology and pyschology at the Universities of Heidelberg, Frankfurt and Munich, and was trained in psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytical Institute in Berlin. Since 1926 he has devoted himself to consultant psychology and theoretical investigation. He has been a Terry Lecturer at Yale University and has lectured at Columbia, Bennington, the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry and the National University of Mexico. D. T. Suzuki D.Lit. Late Professor of Buddhist Philosophy at Otani University, Kyoto, was born in 1869 and died in 1960. He was probably the greatest authority of Buddhist philosophy and was certainly the greatest authority on Zen Buddhism. His major works in English on the subject of Buddhism nurnber a dozen or more, and of his works in Japanese, as yet unknown to the West, there are at least 18. Dr. Suzuki wrote with authority; not only had he studied originál works in Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese and Japanese, but had an up-to-date knowledge of Western thought in Germán and French as well as in the English which he spoke and wrote so fluently.
