Five years ago, Andrew Handier and Susan V. Meschel, both survivors of the Holocaust and graduates of the Jewish High School of Budapest, started a project of unusual sensitlvlty. They asked some of thelr friends, who had also survived the Holocaust as children, to write down their painful and often harrowlng experiences for a collection of personal remembrances.
The eleven contributors to this anthology share three unique charac-teristics: All were children during World War II and are thus part of the last generation of survivors old enough to remember the experiences of the Holocaust. All were born and brought up in Hungary, the last country to be occupied by Hitler's forces, and the country that saw more than 75 percent of its Jewish population perish in less than a year. Child survivors of the Holocaust are in a unique position. They belong to a generation of survivors who form the last link of the chain of rememberers of the Holocaust. They are the transmitters of its precious, terrible legacy. And although they faced many dangerous situations, they did so with strength, hope, and optimism, qualities that remained undimmed throughout the horrors they experienced. Vissza
