In the Spring and Summer of 1942, battle-scarred formations of U.S. Army Air Force B-26 Marauders threw themselves across the Owen Stanley mountain range of New Guinea to attack the Japanese ad vanee base at Lae. In these skies the American airmen were met by the veteran pilots of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Tainan Air Wing, flying the vaunted Zero fighter, and led by several of Japan's greatest aces. The Zero's of the Tainan Air Wing had arrived at Lae in early April 1942 to cover the Japanese advance against Australia and had seen daily combat against the Allied airmen who were determined to stall and defeat the Japanese approach to Australia.
This painting by acclaimed Japanese aviation artist Shigeo Koike was completed in collaboration with Saburo Sakai, and depicts one particular air engagement of the many near Lae—the ättack by the Marauders of the 22nd Bomb Group on 9 June 1942 and the defense of that airfield by Saburo Sakai and the Zero fighters of the Tainan Air Wing. Sakai completed the Pacific war as Japan's-greatest^uxviving ace with a total,oL64 confirmed victories in a combat career spanning lTyears.
Sakai and the artist have dedicated the painting to the courage displayed by all airmen in the skies of the Pacific Theater óf combat and, in particular, to the Allied and Japanese airmen who feil in combat over New Guinea during the fateful year of 1942.
Each limited edition print also includes a narrative account of this event as part of the certificate of authen-ticity. This latter historie document is individually signed by both the artist and Sakai, and is itself suitable for framing, providing as it does additional details about the air combat .engagement and the aircraft involved.
