Working
AND THEIR TRAINING
All
'You must buy dogs for jobs,' says the author. 'Then you must train them.'
The 'jobs' are finding game, flushing it, pointing and retrievingj and the twenty dogs discussed (list on back flap) are specialists in one, or sometimes more, of these jobs.
The dogs in each category are described, together with the origins and history of each breed, the particular talents of the breed and the Kennel Club standard. Then comes a long chapter on training which deals in detail with the programme of learning to be followed by both the experienced and novice handler as well as his dog, beginning with the absolute basics of puppy training. This chapter includes the training common to all the categories of dog, while specialised training for spaniels, for pointers and setters, and for pointer-retrievers is set out in separate chapters. The book ends with extracts from the Rules for Field Trials and advice on competing in these and in working tests.

Each dog breed is illustrated in colour, and there are also many black and white photographs of the various types in action, both during training and in the field. Diagrams of hunting patterns in different wind directions are given.
H.J.L. Osbourn, a regular contributor to Country Life, brings to his subject not only considerable experience as a trainer of gundogs, but also an unusual clarity and directness of language, which enable him to put across a mass of technical information in the easiest possible way. Vissza
