There are crosswords and other puzzles, stories and games, all designed to practise what has been learnt in Coursebook 1 The General Editor, Geoffrey Broughton, began to teach English as a foreign language during his army service with Mauritian troops. After wide experience of teaching in schools, he took up the training of teachers of English, first at the Malayan Teachers' Training College, Kirkby, and since 1963 at the University of London Institute of Education. Teaching English and lecturing to teachers has taken him to Austria, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, Holland, Hungary, Iran, Nigéria, Poland and Spain. He has written and edited many books concerned with English as a foreign language, and is well-known as a contributor to B.B.C. English by Radio programmes. He is married with three children. 'Delightful, thorough and solidly competent. . .' Education Quarter/y '. . . anyone concerned with providing a basic or remediai course for adults, particularly if a language laboratory is available, would do well to look at Success with English.' English Bulletin '. . . a work informed not merely by theoretical rigour but rich in the results of empirical research.' Contemporary Review 'Success with English is a course that is certain to be widely used and will doubtless form the basis of E.F.L. teaching in institutions throughout the world. It deserves a long and eminent career. The authors would almost certainly prefer to be remembered as teachers rather than theorists, and on the basis of this course, they are likely to succeed.'
