There's only one rule. It's very simple. If they find out, they kill you.
That's the rule undercover cops live—and die—by.
Jerry Speziale was one New York's best undercover cops. As "Crazy-Jerry, junkie from Jersey," he spent years busting thousands of low-level drug dealers. But he wanted to go deeper to the source.
So in 1990 he joined Group 93, a special Drug Enforcement Agency task force tapped to take down the powerful Call drug cartel in South America. Transforming himself again, Speziale became "Geraldo Bartone, drug transporter" and began a series of adventures that took him to Guatemala, Miami, Costa Rica, Brazil, Colombia, and beyond. It takes a special kind of person to lead a double life.
He was Jerry Speziale: New York cop. New Jersey resident, loving husband, doting father. And he was "Geraldo Bartone": fast-living, highflying drug transporter—one ofthe best in the world.
An undercover narc with a yen for action, Speziale had joined Group 93, a special narcotics task force assigned to destroy the deadliest drug cartel—the infamous South American Cali group. Speziale became Bartone, learned the intricacies of the drug trade, and penetrated the highest levels of Cali's power structure.
As Bartone, Speziale found himself doing things he never could have dreamed of: setting up phony import/export companies, building landing strips in the Guatemalan jungle, piloting planes and skippering Cali-owned yachts loaded with drugs. Within a few years, he and his Group 93 cohorts became the most successfiil drug unit in U.S. history, arresting dozens of high-level dealers and seizing twenty-two thousand pounds of cocaine and millions of dollars.
But no one can live a double life forever. Eventually the stress, the betrayals, and the constant suspicions of Internal Affairs began to take their toll. Paranoid, sleep deprived, pushed to the breaking point, Speziale nearly lost it all. How he came back and achieved his greatest triumph forms the climax of this harrowing, heroic, inspiring true story.
