Within the Tides
The four stories in this volume were not written as a quartet. They were published separately and were all the result of Conrad's attempt to diversify the manner of his story-telling. They 'were written at different times, under various influences, and with the deliberate intention of trying several ways of telling a tale.'
And indeed, what diversity is here! The scene switches from the exotic East to England and the Spanish Coast, the mood from the strong emotional romanticism of The Planter of Malata' to the chill ghostliness of The Inn of the Two Witches'. Conrad's virtuosity is nowhere more in evidence than in these four stories, which show that he was a classic writer of English, in his smaller works as in his great novels.
