A radiant poetic oeuvre lies in the shadow cast by Attila József's tragic suicide at 32. In pure songlike lyrics and longer elegiac poems, József inscribed not only his own sad fate but that of millions in an East Europe that was only nominally "between the wars" during the '20s and '30s of our century. His poetics were informed by Marx and Freud - the intellectual icons of his times, and József's brooding passions break through the barriers of poverty and alienation, and transcend conditions that are local and historical. This selection of 93 poems places special emphasis on the deeply resonant late works dating from 1935-37.
John Bátki's stories have appeared in The New Yorker and he has received the 0. Henry award. His published translations of twentieth-century Hungarian literature include works by Gyula Krúdy, Ernő Szép, Géza Ottlik, Péter Lengyel and Iván Mándy.
