Though quite varied, the plays are all on the same theme, and it is hoped that they will be useful in any thematic study of 'work'. It is also hoped that they will provide material for drama and play-reading lessons, and that they will encourage a systematic and critical study of television drama.
To start with there are three examples of the single television play. These specially commissioned plays -one being the winner of a play writing competition run by Thames Television in 1978 - concern themselves with current controversies and issues in the world of work. Of the other two plays one is a television situation comedy and the other an episode from a long running serial. These have been included to emphasize that popular programmes such as these convey ideas and feelings to large audiences, just as much as does the serious 'one-off play.
