edited by Horace Howard Furness
This edition of "Othello," edited by one of the foremost of American scholars, is one of the series known as the New Variorum edition of Shakespeare. This volume constitutes the most fully annotated edition of the play in existence.
It contains the text from the First Folio of 1623, accompanied by a collation of the texts of the other three Folios, the first three Quartos, and all of the thirty-nine critical editions that appeared after them. This collation records all variant readings, differences in spellings, emendations, modifications, conjectures, etc., that appear in these various editions. There are copious notes and comments from all the editions collated, from the First Quarto of 1622 down to the Grant White edition of 1883. Also incorporated into the notes are grammatical and verbal criticisms selected from the writings of essayists and critics who wrote on Shakespeare during that same period of time.

The appendixes contain a rich variety of commentary and criticism. First there are sections in which Furness reviews comments of earlier critics, and gives conclusions of his own, on such matters as the text, date of composition, date of action, duration of action, sources for the plot, Othello's color, actors, costuming, etc. These are followed by critical appreciations of various aspects of the play by English critics such as Johnson, Maione, Coleridge, Lamb, Hazlitt, and Macaulay; such German critics as Voss, Schlegel, Horn, and Ulrici; and French critics such as Voltaire, Hugo and Taine. The final appendix is a discussion by Furness of the problem of translating Shakespeare into a foreign language, illustrated by numerous excerpts from translations into French, German, Greek, Italian and Spanish. The bibliography is very full, containing all the editions of "Othello" collated in the textual notes, as well as all important works of criticism on the play, both in English and in several foreign languages.
Every lover of Shakespeare should have this edition in his private library, for it is inexhaustible in covering the texts, sources, critical history, and background information. It is certain to improve your understanding and appreciation of the plays. Every English major and English teacher will find this book indispensable, the text which will be used for self-study and classes. It contains within itself an entire reference library that you would have difficulty finding elsewhere.
Unabridged, unaltered republication of twelfth edition. Index to more important notes and appendix. Bibliography of works on"Othello"in all languages. List of editions collated in textual notes, viii + 471pp. 5% x 8V2. T1003 Paperbound $2.25
