LUMBERJACK
Paintings and Story by
william kurelek
When he was a young man, William Kurelek signed up as a lumberjack in the Canadian bush. His goal at the time was to earn his independence — to prove his worth to his father and to himself. Now he has drawn on his memories and experiences and in detailed text and 25 stunning full-color paintings he describes a way of life that has virtually disappeared.
The life of the lumberjack was unique, a way of living in which a man was measured not by who he was but by what he could do. The life of the lumberjack was unique, a way of living in which a man was measured not by who he was but by what he could do. It attracted a wide variety of men: farmers who had to support their families through the long, hard winter, immigrants who needed to earn a stake, the drifter as well as the ambitious. It meant different things to different individuals but it required of all of them the ability to face up to hard physical labor.
Here we see how the lumberjack used his tools to fell trees, buck the wood, and pile it into cords. Each man was paid for his own work, so more often than not he worked alone. There was a hearty camaraderie, however, when the men returned to camp in the evening, to eat their enormous meals and swap stories as they lay on their bunk beds warmed by the old gasoline drum-box stove.
William Kurelek, one of Canada's most distinguished painters, has here recaptured it all for readers of every age. Vissza
