a Penguin Book
Soldier's Pay is the first novel by the American Nobel Prize winner, who was later to publish Intruder in the Dust and Light in August. It was during the summer of 1925, when he was working in New Orleans, that Faulkner met Sherwood Anderson and was encouraged by him to write
)a novel.
Unlike his later books this post-war story of a wounded, helpless, and dying officer returning home to his devoted father and his fickle sweetheart is set in Georgia, but some of Faulkner's feeling for the South and many of his character-types are already foreshadowed.
When Soldier's Pay came out in England in 1930, Arnold b=;5é^nett, wi|h extraordinary foresight, wrote:
' FjhulXner j« the coming man. He has inexhaustible invention, powerful imagination, a wondrous gift of characterization, a finished skill in dialogue; and he writes, generally, like an angel .He has in him the elements of real greatness, and Soldier's Pay contains many quite marvellous pages.'
