This book is intended as a lasting reminder for all lovers of Vienna, it is intended to preserve a vision of the town, as much for those who are visiting it at this moment as for those who are alreadyback in their home country. Natu-rally this work cannot do justiee to all the sights whieh have grown up in the course of eenturies and the visitor may see much in Vienna which he will not find in this book. Mingling vvith the pictures of historic buildings which display the glory and pomp of the past and mirror a morsel of history can be seen the contours of a new era. The development of Vienna from the past up to the present time is shown in the examples here. The will to live and belief in the future of the Viennese is displayed in our modern buildings.
But the outward picture of the city and part of the daily life of its inhabitants will not only be shown, the cultural ac-tivities of Vienna are alsó set forth in many of the photo-graphs.
Music, the Fine Arts, science and technology, drama and craftsmanship will all be dealt vvith. A moving symphony sounds from these pages and the immortal eharm of Vienna is to be felt here.
The late President of the Re-public, Dr. h. c. Theodor Korner, sometime Mayor of Vienna, wrote the following introduction to the first edition of this book. "From among the number of my 234 predeces-sors in this office there were somé who Iived in good times and somé who lived in bad, somé whose names have gone down in history and somé who earried out their duties and were forgottén. The records go back to 1282, but the history of Vienna goes back to begin-nings of recorded time. What seems important to us todav will perhaps not even be known to the coming gener-ations, what can only be hinted at now will be decided in the future." Dr. Korner closed with the words: "Whoever strolls through the town will meet an obstinate will to live which flows through the apparently gentle city of the Muses. In the course of its two thousand years of history there have repeatedly been occasions when the star of Vienna has appeared to set, only to be reborn." The same positive attitűdé is ap-parent in the preface by the present Mayor which opens the book. The countless threads binding Vienna to the world have proved their worth in treaties or by the force of arms. Vienna has become the symbol of a world devoted to the Arts, the atmosphere of which pleasantly surrounds the visitor. This book is intended as a memory of this and of the hours spent here by the visitor. Vissza
