Sheriff Jack Nevelson has wanted to serve and protect his corner of Montana, which includes his lifelong home, the small, tidy town of Bentrock. It's a relatively modest task, because aside from somé hard weather, the perils of Bentrock are few. But a fatal accident one night compels Jack to try and protect a part of Bentrock that even a hero would have trouble saving: its innocence. For everyone in the community would agree that the two people who died in that car had no business heading out of town together. One victim is a girl who has just graduated from school that day. The other is the headmaster ofthe local junior school, and a married man like Jack. There is a story twisted in the wreckage - one that Jack believes would do even greater harm to the town than the accident itself. But as Jack sets out to unravel the mystery of their deaths, he begins to create another story, a lie that will reverberate throughout an entire community, and into the shadows of his own heart. Larry Watson, author of Montana 1948, has written here a taut vivid növel: a mystery and a brilliant portrait of a character, of a town and of the choices that can change lives forever. Praise for Montana 1948 'A richly poetic növel which patrols the mythic contours ofthe American West. Meditative and laconic, Watson lays bare the complex dynamics between landscape and personality, geography and destiny' Aréna 'Meditative, rich and written closely to the bone, Montana 1948, is a beautiful növel about the meaning of place and the evolution of courage. It is a wonderful book' Louise Erdrich Vissza
