On the title-page of her new volume-Where Love and Friendship Dwelt-Mrs. Belloc Lowndes quotes a French say ing : " A book is an epistle written to unknown friends." It may be expected that the circle of unknown friends she made through I too have lived in Arcadia will welcome what is, in truth, a continuation of that book. In it she describes what followed her return, at the age of seventeen, to the home of her childhood at La Celle, Saint Cloud, of the changes that had taken place there, and of certain important new friendships she then made. The book describes the great change in her life when, at the age of twenty, she became a professional writer. During the six years which followed, she spent a certain amount of time in Paris, coming in contact with many of the noted French writers of that day, such as the poet Paul Verlaine, Zola, Anatole Francé, Edmond de Goncourt, Gyp, and Alphonse Daudet.
