One of the oldest and largest departments of the Hermitage is that of Western European art. Its nucleus was formed in the first quarter of the eighteenth century when the collecting of European paintings began in Russia. The Hermitage collection of German, English and Spanish art includes names of world renown. The collection of French paintings embracing more than five centuries is the most significant outside France, and contains many excellent works by Le Nain. Poussin, Watteau, Chardin, Ingres, Delacroix, the Impressionists, Matisse, Cézanne and Picasso. The introduction gives a historical account of the Hermitage and traces the formation of the collection of Western European painting through its main stages.
