It may not be the fabled Wild West that it used to be, but gazing out over its never-ending horizons you can still sense the power of the American Dream, the myth that once drew millions of immigrants westwards in search of freedom and independence. At their journey's end, majestic panoramas of breathtaking beauty opened up before them, created over millions of years by the unfathomable forces of nature.
This book takes the traveller through the incredible landscapes of Western America, most of which have now been designated National Parks. From the Rocky Mountains, over to the high peaks and forests of Olympic National Park, then into Yellowstone, where erupting geysers, fumaroles and hot springs, over 200 species of birds, and bison, elk and bears roaming free attract about ten thousand visitors a year. Next comes Crater Lake, an abyss 5 miles wide and nearly 2,000 feet deep, followed by Yosemite, a park famous for its magnificent waterfalls.
Extending to the south-west lies the Colorado Plateau, which time and the churning currents of the Colorado River have slowly carved out an incomparable landscape of canyons and bizarre rock formations. The largest and deepest of the Colorado gorges, the Grand Canyon, with its spectacular striated sides of yellow and red sandstone, can be admired safely from the rim but explored only on foot.
The far side of the Colorado plateau opens out onto arid desert landscapes extending from California down to Mexico. Here you encounter Death Valley, 140 miles of unrelenting rock, the Sonoran Desert with its giant cacti, the Petrified Forest in Arizona and the weird limestone formations of White Sands.
With its 152 colour illustrations, handy division into individual regions and National Parks, tips for travellers and important addresses at the back, this is the ideal book for planning a tour of the Great American West and for anyone who enjoys pictures of nature on a grand scale.
