"WE BUILD THE ROAD AS WE TRAVEL PROVIDES THE BEST I
ACCOUNT I have read of the famous Mondragon cooperative movement. It may I
be a long road indeed that we have to travel, but this book offers one of the finest I
signposts to an alternative modernity. Roy Morrison's work is superbly I
comprehensive, beautifully written and rieh in the detail that is so often needed for I
a lived example of communitarian relationships. No one who has seriously I
contemplated a communitarian alternative to our present competitive, grow-or-die I
and ecologically pernicious society can ignore Morrison's Superlative work. It is I absolutely 'must' reading for social activists as well as social theorists, a gern of I a study in an otherwise generally bleak time of personal quietism and withdrawal."

Beginning some forty years ago with a lowly parish priest and several students, people in and around the town of Mondragon in the Basque région of Spain have built a vital, successful and résilient network of more than 170 worker-owned-and-operated coopératives serving well over 100,000 people. The Mondragon coopératives include a large worker-controlled bank, worker-self managed technical assistance and research-and-development organizations, a chain of department stores, high-tech firms, appliance manufacturers and machine shops. Despite Franco's repression, economie recessions, and fierce compétition, the cooperative network has created over 21,000 secure and well-paid jobs (losing only three businesses in the process), forged innovative and responsive democratie decision-making structures, and invented increasingly sophisticated forms of democratie participation, coopération, and community. What an inspirational and practical model of democratie community économies!
