Wayne Winterrowd, a native of Louisiana, now lives and gardens in Vermont. After receiving graduate degrees in French and English, he taught school for twenty-six years. In 1977, he and Joe Eck began building the gardens at North Hill in southern Vermont. In addition to contributing articles to gardening magazines both in the United States and abroad, he is a partner with Joe Eck in North Hill Associates, a garden design firm.
