Washington, District of Columbia, is more than the capital of the United States of America. It is a fast-paced, adventurous city with both a permanent population and one that fluctuates every two to four years, depending on terms of office—many of Washington's two million people are government employees.
The lovely town plan drawn up two centuries ago by Major Pierre L Enfant for the capital of the new nation is still in place.
