WASHINGTON
Chosen as the Federal capital at the conclusion of the American Civil War, Washington D.C. is one of the few capital cities founded specifically as a seat of government and as a center for international representation. It was with this end in view that a young French military engineer, Pierre Charles L'Enfant was appointed by the then newly elected president, George Washington to design an expansive metropolis which today occupies an impressive area on the banks of the Potomac River.

The result was a city of broad avenues, spacious squares and beautiful parkland dominated by the elegant Capitol building rising in impressive silhouette at the end of the Mall and the charming, essentially modest White House, which has been included among the finest and most appropriate residences of state in the world. L'Enfant's plans for the location of these two buildings remain as focal points for a complex of monuments and buildings, all of which retain a fundamental adherence to the image of Washington as a vital and dignified capital city. The Supreme Court, the Pentagon, the Library of Congress, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial among a multitude of other 'statues, columns and other ornaments' intended to honor the nation's great, all serve to emphasize the original intention to construct a witness to the spirit of the American past and present and a symbol of the ideals of freedom, justice and majesty.
The fascinating color photographs in this book illustrate admirably these famous monuments in addition to the many other features that have made the United States' capital a splendid and memorable city. Vissza
