alcs is a land of castles. Even to the newcoirier, it is not difficult to see why. From the lush valleys of the eastern and southern borderlands - the March - to the rugged heart of the mountainous north and west, picturesque silhouettes of castles enhance an already engaging landscape. With names as famous as Caernarfon and Harlech, Kidwelly and Pembroke, or Chepstow and Raglan, these treasured remnants of the Middle Ages are familiar to both residents and visitors alike. If we pause for a moment though, and look a little more deeply into the Welsh countryside, it soon becomes clear that castles are just one part of a rich inheritance of ancient and historic sites - a legacy as rich and varied as that of any part of the British Isles.
