In the spring of 1999, war came to Europe. As Yugoslavia's military machine attacled its own citizens in the province of Kosovo, the United States and its allies rose to action. It was modern war—limited in scope, measured in effect, extraordinarily complex in execution. And in the end, after ten weeks of steadily intensifying air attacl, the Yugoslav troops were withdrawn and the Kosovar Albanians returned to their homes. Remarkably, not a single American was killed in combat.
General Wesley K. Clark was the American commander who oversaw this massive military effort. Here he describes, for the first time, how he walked the tightrope of high diplomacy and military strategy and navigated the crushing restraints of domestic politics. Clark takes us behind the scenes for an unprecedented view of decisionmaking in real time, laying bare the conflicts within the Atlantic Alliance as well as within the U.S. government itself.
With the United States now embarked on a new war against terrorism, Clark offers a blueprint for how the American military must adapt to meet the new threats. Waging Modern War is thus the story not only of war today, and but also of war as it will be fought tomorrow.
GENERAL WESLEY K. CLARK, U.S.A. (Ret.), was Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, from 1997 to 2000 and is currently a military analyst for CNN. He served previously as director of strategic plans and policy for the Joint Staff at the Pentagon from 1994 to 1996 and was the lead military negotiator for the Bosnian Peace Accords at Dayton in 1995. He is in business in Little Rock, Arkansas and Washington, D.C. Vissza
