In Ihe laie 1920s Somerset Maugham travelled by various means of transport from Rangoon in Burma to Haiphong in Annám. THE GENTLEMAN IN THE PARLOUR, first published in 1930, is his revealing and entertaining account of that journey. Maugham was fortunate in being able to rove freely through Burma, Siam and Annám. His book describes not only the countryside through which he travelled but alsó includes numerous sketches ofthe people he met: from French government offieials and disgruntled Europeans ^tranded' in the East to the local inhabitants - happy and amiable Burmese, Shan horsemen, Laos, Tais, Kaws, the head-hunting Was and numerous other tribes. Maugham was to discover how little the lifestyle of village people had changed in a thousand years and came away believing that in the East 'the most impressive, the most awe-inspiring monument of antiquity is neither temple, nor citadel, nor great wall, but man'.
