This small volume endeavours to present a brief survey of an attractive and varying type of building which grew increasingly popular in Hungary in the past century. The villás built around the middle of the 19th century in the hills of Buda and near the City Park in Pest were only meant to function as summer dwellings. Those built from 1870 on, around the outer section of Andrássy út, were designed to offer a permanent home to the upper middle class. During the following decades the sight of villás __became increasingly common. They bore the marks of changing times, tastes and styles in the areas of Zugliget, Svábhegy, Gellérthegy, Rózsadomb and Pasarét.
