The great debate about the theory of evolution has waxed strong for more than a century. This book unfolds the history of the controversies, and introduces the personalities involved. The text and the striking photogi aphs help the non-specialist reader to see how this scientific theory has radically changed the way we understand our world. The writers tell the vivid story of how ideas of evolution have developed from the time of the Greeks through to the discovery of DNA's complex structure. There were some strong disagreements along the line, not always between science and religion but sometimes v^^ithin the scientific and religious worlds themselves.
Of course the disagreement continues today. And Blackmore and Page offer reasons why people oppose evolution so fiercely, showing how the theory can be wrongly applied. They also explain the scientific ideas: how natural selection is thought to work, what 'survival of the fittest' can mean in practice
