The new FONTANA UNESCO pocket art series will be a complete library of world art. All the illustrations will be specially photographed and the texts will be by leading authorities. Encompassing art treasures of all countries, the series ranges from the earliest primitive cave paintings to works by contemporary painters.

VERMEER
The records of Vermeer's life remain as scarce as his pictures—only some thirty-six having been established as authentic. Almost all that is known is that Vermeer, the son of a Delft silk weaver, was baptised in 1632. His wife bore him eleven children and. In the tradition of great artists, he knew poverty and almost perpetual hardship. He died at the age of forty-three.
