The book is a series of 'soundings' and includes chapters on psychic energy, loneliness, fear and guilt. The second half of the book is concerned with more specifically religious questions such as prayer, confession, and the psychological implications of Christian dogma. The author writes: 'The great problem is still how to get to know oneself, how to relate to what one really is and how to recognise the conditionings and prejudices which keep us in a state of unconsciousness. No one can do this completely alone - we all need help.' Vera von der Heydt was born in Germany.
