Mr R, A. Hamilton was born in Ireland in 1912, the son of an Irish father and a Scottish mother. He was brought up in England and took his degree in Natural Science at Oxford in 1934. Soon afterwards he joined, as physicist, the Oxford LJníversíty Arctic Expedition (1935-6) to Nordaustlandet and carried out research on atmospheric physics. Finding Oxford Hfe fiat after the stirring life ofthe Arctic he joined athree-man expedition to N.W. Greenland and Ellesmere Isiand and spent the Arctic year 1937-8 at the smali Danish and Eskimo settlement at Thu!e. There he met the Danish governess ofthe governor's children and they were married after returning home, From the Arctic to the tropics, he spent four years during the war in Nigéria as a meteorologist. After demobilization he joined the Meteorologícal OfRce, but once more the Arctic called, and he was chosen as Chief Scientist and second ín command ofthe British North Greenland Expedition (1952-4).
