Recent discoveries have established the endothelium as a very large and highly active endocrine organ which is responsible for a host of vital physiological functions. This in tum is leading to rapid advances in understanding the pathogenesis of some of the most serious and most common diseases, including hypertension, atherosclerosis and inflammation.
Many of the most important questions about endothelial functions remain to be answered. It is the purpose of the book to describe current research and to indicate directions along which answers may be found.
The editors and contributors are intemationally leading scientists in these investigations.

Professor Colin J. Schwartz
M D, D Sc, FRACP, graduated M B, B S from the University of Adelaide in 1954, Doctor of Medicine 1959. His interests have focused on cardiovascular diseases, with emphasis on the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction, and the cellular, molecular, and hemodynamic components of atherogenesis. Presently Professor Emeritus, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, Texas. ¦
