VASARELY
by Gaston Diehl
Illustrations in Full Color and 22 in Monochrome
The secrets of a work of art always remain to some degree unfathomed, even in the case of Victor Vasarely, whose authority is indeed universally recognized and who has been so willing to explain the goals he was pursuing.
With the same patience and care lavished on his previous works about the most famous representatives of modern art, from Matisse to Picasso, the author proceeds to examine Vasarely's masterful course of development through the years. He retraces, beyond an uneventful life, the stages in Vasarely's work which the artist's exacting consciousness succeeded in intuitively shaping, almost from his early days in his native Hungary, in order to complete its triumphal fruition in accordance with a logical development whose perfection commands our admiration.
Diehl starts with the elements of Vasarely's personal semantics and mural experiments, goes on to the bases of a kineticism which he very clearly defined in 1955, and ends with his large architectonic integrations. After placing in its context Vasarely's language of plastic unities, the author analyzes the flowering of the artist's genius from its various angles. In doing so he unfolds a concise panorama of the various aesthetic currents and tendencies which have come into existence in Paris during the past twenty years, a panorama evoked by this artist who frequently played in it the dual role of moving spirit and witness. This study, which is at once a warm homage to the major representative of Kineticism, to which Vasarely has given all its stature and nobility, and a simple initiation into the art of today, is enriched by an excellent selection of 22 black-and-white and 5 2 color reproductions showing the quality of Vasarely's work.
