Anyone who has visited an art gallery will understand the value of being able to look at paintings close up, to see the way the colours have been used and how the paint has been handled. Now you can have your own personal art gallery in this series of books. The History and Techniques of the Great Masters. Each book brings you a selection of ten or more famous paintings, magnificently reproduced in full colour, and with actual size details so that you can see the way the artist has worked — just as though the paintings were hanging on your own waUs. The text analyses each painting in turn, and informative captions tell you exactly which techniques the artist has used to obtain particular effects, what type of canvas and priming was used, and how the coloiu-s were chosen, mixed and appUed.
Vincent van Gogh sold only one painting in his lifetime, yet by the time of his death artists and critics were beginning to recognize the uniqueness of his talent, and today he is regarded as one of the greatest painters who ever lived. Although he was influenced by other artists, he quickly developed his own highly individual style, using colour and brushwork to express emotions in a way that had never been done before. His harsh, vivid colours, vigorous descriptive brushwork, thick impastos and distorted perspectives seemed strange and disturbing to those accustomed to the blander approach of the Impressionists, but to later generations they were an inspiration. Van Gogh's work formed the starting point for the Expressionist movement in the early years of this century, and there can be few artists living today who do not owe him a debt.
The selection of paintings shown here traces the development of Van Gogh's artistic vision from the sombre browns and blacks of The Potato Eaters to the brilliant colours and flame-like forms of his south of France landscapes. In the text, the author outiines the major events of his brief, tormented life, and explains the formative influences on his work. Vissza
