Marcello Bertinetti was born in Vercelli in 1952. Following a family tradition, he studied fencing, taking the art to its height. In 1973, he became the Italian fencing champion and in 1976 he participated in the Montreal Olympics.
In the meantime, Bertinetti had moved to Milan to complete his studies in engineering. But his passion for film and photography was absorbing more and more of his time and interest. In fact, in 1973, his love of photography sent him on several demanding trips across the world to work with writers from some of the most prestigious geographic magazines.
An expert scuba-diver as well, Bertinetti filmed television documentaries, most notably in Polynesia and along the coast of the Red Sea.

She went with him on his long and difficult expeditions; in 1977 they took their first trip to Polynesia, where they made underwater films. In 1978, they filmed an interesting photographic series in India, and traveled in a well equipped camper through Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, finally, pushing themselves to the Himalayas. In the past year they have undertaken expeditions even more difficult including one to the Arctic Region and another consisting of a march of over 100 kilometers to reach the sources of the Ganges.
