The Illinois-born poet Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) was a champion of the oral tradition of poetry. He found its precedents in the Greek custom of singing, chanting and speaking lyrics, and in American vaudeville as well. And he wrote many verses himself that were meant to be spoken and performed, gaining wide popularity across America as a touring poet/performer.
This volume presents a generous selection of Vachel Lindsay's poems, including a number of his most popular performance pieces—"The Congo" and "The Santa-Fe Trail" among them—reprinted with his own directions on how to recite them. Also included is a poem entitled "The Jingo and the Minstrel," subtitled "An Argument for the Maintenance of Peace and Goodwill with the Japanese People." Here, too, are "Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight," poems to film stars Mary Pickford and Blanche Sweet, and over 70 other works sure to delight and intrigue both lovers of American poetry and...
