Nomograms for steam generation and utilization
V. Ganapathy
Even in this computer age, the nomogram has withstood the test of time.
A nomogram, you will recall, is a simple graphical tool that presents all the variables involved in a calculation on a single sheet of paper. By making a few moves with a straight edge, you can arrive at the result or study the effect of any parameter on a system with ease.
If a system is described by, for instance, five variables, a nomogram can be developed to present each variable on a scale. The effect of any one variable on the others can be seen at a glance. This offers an advantage over a calculator/computer approach to handling the problem. Using those tools, one has to rewrite equations so each variable can be described in terms of the others. The nomogram, on the other hand, yields the solution or the effect of any variable on the others at a glance. Several sets of conditions can be studied with ease. With a calculator or computer,...

With a calculator or computer, then, only one set of conditions can be solved at a time. With a nomogram, the entire system Is described by the scales on a sheet, representing solutions to several hundred sets of conditions.
Over the past decade-and-a-half, the author, V Ganapathy has been involved in developing over 100 nomograms of interest to steam plant engineers. Steam is invariably used in power plants, process plants, manufacturing facilities, heating/cooling applications, in food processing, refineries, hospitals, building complexes, laundries, cogeneration plants, etc. With steam are associated boilers, fuel systems, piping, valves, fans, and pumps. Hence, topics such as combustion, boiler efficiency, fluid flow, pressure drop, and heat transfer assume great imports^ce with designers, operators, and users of steam systems.
The nomograms that appe^ in this book have already proven their worth with thousands of engineers across a wide swath of industries. All have been published in such influential trade magazines as POWER ENGINEERING, CHEMICAL ENGINEERING, HEATING PIPING AIR CONDITIONING, OIL AND GAS JOURNAL, HYDROCARBON PROCESSING, and PLANT ENGINEERING. It was because of the persistent clamor from innumerable readers for more of these time- and drudgery-saving nomograms that the author decided to assemble them into one convenient location - i.e. this book.
(Continued on the bac/f flap)
Between these covers you will find over 70 widely used nomograms covering topics such as: (1) Fuels, combustion, heat recovery; (2) Steam generation and usage; (3) Heat transfer; (4) Valves and piping; (5) Fluid flow and pressure drop.
Each nomogram defines a commonly encountered problem. A brief theory is presented along with the development of the equations for better understanding of the problem. In some cases, a simplified design procedure is developed. Finally, an example is worked out for each nomogram, taken from a practical engineering situation. Data that would otherwise have to be obtained from other sources are built into the scales, thus saving valuable time. Each nomogram is complete in itself, providing the solution to a real-world problem — without the need to look up data from other sources.
In a word, NOMOGRAMS FOR STEAM GENERATION AND UTILIZATION is a "must" reference for plant managers and engineers in the chemical process industries, electric utilities, all sorts of manufacturing operations, and managers and staff of building complexes and other facilities.
V. Ganapathy is a heat transfer specialist with ABCO Industries Inc., Abilene, Texas. He is engaged in the engineering of heat recovery boilers for process, incineration and cogeneration applications. He also develops software for engineering of heat recovery systems and components. He holds a B Tech degree in mechanical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, and an MSc(eng) in boiler technology from Madras University. Mr. Ganapathy is the author of over 150 articles "on boilers, heat transfer and steam plant systems. He has written four books.
