Sandstone hoodoosand soaringpeaks, glisteningsah flats and ghostly bristlecones, ancient ruins and rushing trout streams. All this - and more - awaits you in the wilderness lands of Utah. It's not surprising that Utah has preserved such a diversity of wilderness, for it has one of the greatest concentrations of protected lands this side of Alaska: five national parks, six national monuments, nine national^brests and 44 state parks. Deserts cover a third of the state - the Escalante to the southwest, the Sevier to the west and the Great Salt Laké Desert, with its fiat salt beds as hard as concrete, to the northwest. Few plants grow in this arid expanse - one of the driest regions in the United States - but there is much beauty to the other-worldly landscapes of its mountains and playas. Another third of the state is covered with forests, most notably in the Rocky Mountain region of northeastern Utah. Here the Uinta and Wasatch ranges erupt in jagged peaks surrounded by alpine lakes and deep canyons, many carved by the ancient glaciers that once dominated the area. The Colorado Plateau stretches over most of the southern and eastern sections of the state and is characterized by broad, rough uplands cut by deep canyons and valleys. Here are found the Henry, La Sal and Abajo mountains, and the sandstone and silence of Utah's red rock country. Tom Till knows the wonder of these sights. With a 4x5 camera in his backpack, he has hiked deep into Utah's wilderness, past the well-known attractions that draw millions of tourists annually, to virtually undiscovered canyons and caves, to seldom-seen lakes and mountain passes. An almost-universal lack of knowledge about the variety and extent of Utah's primitive areas is what prompted him a decade ago to begin documenting his travels with a camera. This photographic collection, Utah, Magnificent Wilderness, is the auspicious result ofTill's years of trekking the length and breadth of his home state. With 92 full-color images hand-selected from a portfolio of thousands, he unveils the full beauty of a state known for striking scenery. To further define Till's understanding of the Utah landscape, the book is divided into chapters detailing the subtle nuances of color, form, motion, moment, sense of place, and microcosms, those intimate scenes that often go unheeded in our fast-paced society. The final chapter of the book documents the rich legacy bequeathed to Utah by its earliest inhabitants, theAnasazi Indians, or "Ancient Ones." Paired with Till's images are selected quotations from Wallace Stegner, longtime conservationist and author. Forty years have passed since Stegner entered the environmental fray during a fight to protect the Green River from damming Vissza
