The History Department Working Papers Series 3 presents articles on the social and cultural history of European cities in the era of the formation of urban modernity. The occasion for the collection was the second international conference of the CEU History Department on the history of European Cities, which was held in Budapest from October 28-30,1994.
The articles elucidate two dimensions of urban developments. In the first place, urban history is situated in a changing relationship between local and supra-local conditions and influences. Secondly, it is a discipline which, in a distinctive way, both allows and encourages the study of the interplay between structural, social and economic causes, dynamics and conditions on the one hand, and political endeavours and aesthetic concerns on the other.
