In a short space of time Molly Redwine's husband of twenty years leaves her for a younger women, her domineering mother dies, her Atlanta family scatters, and Molly is set adrift. Devastated by her husband's lies, haunted by dreams of her mother, and so full of anger that it frightens her, Molly takes refuge by visiting friends on Martha's Vineyard. She stays on after the season, renting a small cottage by a remote up-island pond, and acting as caretaker to her bitter, ageing landlady and her ill and estranged son, Dennis.
