UNIVERSITIES by Abraham Flexner With a new introduction by Clark Kerr, Chairman of the Carnegie Commission on the Future of Higher Education From the introduction: "For more than a half-century, Abraham Flexner devoted his prodigious talents and energies to the cause of education in America. As participant and contributor, as chronicler and critic, and as innovator, he helped shape the course of American education - and particularly medical education-during a great period of modernization and growth. He was a student at the influential Germán universities during the early 1900's, and a frequent visitor and perceptive observer of Oxford and Cambridge and the other great European centers of learning throughout his active life. In 1928 he was invited to give the Rhodes Lectures at Oxford. Those lectures - a distillation of his observations, criticisms, and ideals of 'the modern university' - förmed the basis for this volume which, since its publication in 1930, has become a classic in... Those lectures - a distillation of his observations, criticisms, and ideals of 'the modern university' - förmed the basis for this volume which, since its publication in 1930, has become a classic in the literature of higher education." In UNIVERSITIES Flexner emphasized research and graduate teaching, rather than the undergraduate and service functions of today's huge city and state institutions. But his lectures, expressive of an ideál type of university which was already passing, stand as a milestone in philosophical discussion of the university. Clark Kerr's critical introduction points to Flexner's fallibilities, as well as to the debt owed to him by the great pluralistic organizations of the present. ABRAHAM FLEXNER first came to public attention in 1910, with a scathing report for the Carnegie Foundation on the inadequacies of medical education in the United States and Canada. Before that, he had attended Johns Hopkins University under the dynamic presidency of Dániel Coit Gilman, and studied at Harvard University and in Europe. Concerned throughout his career with raising the sights of American education, at the secondary and university level as well as in the medical schools, his ideas and ideals for universities found lasting expression in the present volume, and in the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He became its first Director in 1930 -the year UNIVERSITIES was first published. A GALAXY BOOK OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS, NEW YORK Vissza
