Patrick Chaffey, Sprog og Sprogundervisning (Norway)
For all those who want or need to know more about Great Britain, this book is ideal. John Randle describes the origins of the British nations from the tribes of early Europe through successive invasions by Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans. He explains the parallel evolution of crown and parliament, but does not neglect the history of society and everyday life. He discusses the development of the arts, in particular of literature and architecture, and documents the growth of the British economy to world dominance — and its relative decline during the twentieth century.
Understanding Britain is illustrated with photographs and maps, and contains a guide to books where the subjects discussed can be followed up in more detail. It also provides a geneaology of Scottish and English kings and queens, and a comprehensive index.
John Randle is a historian who has taught at the University of Toronto and in Venice. From 1974 to 1980 he was senior teacher at the Pitman School of English in London, where his course on British history and culture provided the inspiration for this book. He is currently teaching English at Nihon University in Japan. Vissza
