20th Century Drawings
Part I
Text by Una E. Johnson
Curator of Prints and Drawings, The Brooklyn Museum
20tb Century Drawings, Part I: 1900-1940 demonstrates the variety and the continuing creative awareness of artists who have sensed the spirit of this turbulent period, as did artists in the Italian Renaissance and other great creative periods in man's history.
The 20th-century artist has sometimes turned to a private world which is fascinating to those willing to seek it. Some of the drawings included in this volume were intended as works of art by themselves, others were preliminary studies for major works in painting and sculpture. Still others were taken from artists' sketchbooks; Miss Johnson, a well-known authority in this field, describes these as "unpremeditated" sketches. All of these constitute very personal expressions. Stripped of the under-
paintings, glazes and varieties of brushwork which distract attention in paintings, a modern drawing is the most vivacious... Tovább

Stripped of the under-
paintings, glazes and varieties of brushwork which distract attention in paintings, a modern drawing is the most vivacious and direct—even impulsive—line to the individual spirit of an artist.
This book contains 102 illustrations beginning with the colorful early drawings of the French Fauves (called "Wild Beasts" by conventional critics of 1906), German Expressionists, and their f(^lowers in England and America; it then moves on to the more intellectual, geometric and abstract elements stemming from. Cubism and Italian Futurism. Ending just before the two main currents of 20th-century art merged, around 1940, into the style identified as Abstract Expressionism, this volume is followed by Part II, also available in this series.
