This book examines man's ambivalent attitudes to money and the dangers of ascribing to money abstract powers which it does not possess. The result can be disillusion and finally a revolt against or flight from the money economy itself.
Developing the views of two of the most influential thinkers about money, Georg Simmel and John Maynard Keynes, the author shows that the maintenance of monetary order can be defended as a major social good, on economic and politicai grounds and on philosophical grounds as well.

The use of money, and the innumerable varieties of behavior connected with the getting, saving, and spending of it, are integrai features of the way in which society works. Frankel attacks "Nominalist" theories which imply that money is something external to the fabric of society, a thing or commodity in its own right, which governments are entitled to manipulate in pursuit of their own limited economic or social ends.
Both Simmel and Keynes understood the economic uses and psychological power of money and were sensitive to its resultant influence on human character and behavior.
Professor Frankel shows how their views not only epitomize the conflicting ideolo-gies of the 19th and 20th centuries but also illuminate the monetary fears and uncertainties which now beset us.
Professor Frankel is Professor Emeritus in the University of Oxford, and was Visiting Professor of Economics, University of Virginia in 1967 and from 1969 to 1974. Vissza
