An H. E. B. Paperback Twentieth-Century English Poetry This book provides an account of the poetry of the last 75 years that is simple, straightforward and free from jargon. It is ídeally suited to the student or interested generál reader who is looking for guidance through the enormous rangé and variety of English poetry produced in this century. Anthony Thwaite first considers the background of contemporary poetry - the difficulties it has had to face, the different attempts made to overcome them, and the nature of its audience. An H. E. The main part of the book is then taken up with the discussion of sixteen major poets, from Yeats and Hopkins to Larkin and Hughes. This is illustrated by a skilful use of quotation and analysis of particular passages About two dozen other poets are discussed in less detail. Somé forty poets are thus displayed for the reader's attention. To have given fewer would have failed to iilustrate the richness of the period; to have given more would have run the risk of the book becoming a mere catalogue of names. The result is a compact and illuminating survey that will give the reader the basic groundwork from which he can go ahead with his own further explorations. The Author Anthony Thwaite is co-editor of Encounter. He is a poet, critic, and broadcaster; and lecturer for one term each year in the Schooi of English and American Studies of the University of East Anglia. He lives in Norfolk and is married with four daughters. Vissza
