ments.
Performers such as Charlie Chaplin and
Pablo Casals, whose legendary interpreta-
tions remain significant signposts in their
art forms, are included, as are political fig-
ures and statesmen who have had a pivotal
influence, such as Mao, Churchill, Gandhi,
and Roosevelt. Also included are certain
figures, such as Kierkegaard and Marx, who
by dates belong securely in the nineteenth
century but whose main influence is in our
time. Particular attention has been devoted
to new areas that have been developed in
