Turkish chronicles from the 16th and 17th centuries are highly valuable, though rarely quoted, sources of the history of medieval Central Europe in generál and the Carpathian Basin in particular. The plasticity of the delightful descriptions of battles, campaigns and occupied towns are enhanced by the colourful and vivid illustrations provided by the boon companion of the chronicler, the miniaturist. These masters were not infrequently of Western ori-gin. Although Islamic culture shies away from the representa-tion of figures, in Turkish manu-scripts one can often find depic-tions of battles, towns reduced to ruins or peace signing ceremon-ies, which of necessity show people. Usually these pictures are alsó true to life renderings of the depicted event. In this volume, Géza Fehér, an Orientalist working in the Hungárián National Museum of Budapest, has collected the miniatures which are associated with the Turkish rule of Hungary in the i6th century.
