THE AUTHORS E. C. BENTLEY, a Londoner by birth, began journalism in (902, and was columnist on the Daily News and later on the editorial staff of the Daily Telegraph, as well as a frequent contributor to Punch and other periodicals. In 1912 he produced Trent's Last Case as an experiment in a new kind of detective story, and was greatly surprised by its remarkable success. He has alsó pufcl'.shed Trent Intervenes (1938), and Those Days (1940), a volume of memoirs. He is well known as the inventor of the 'Clerihew'-the biographical nonsense verse exemplified in Biography for Beginners. HERBERT WARNER ALLÉN, born in 1881, was educated at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford. For many years he was Paris correspondent cf the Morning Post, and in the First World War was a war correspondent with the French armies for three years.
