In this readable and splendidly illustrated survey, each of the thirteen Departments in the British Museum is represented by an individual chapter, written by a senior member of its staff. These essays describe the work and chief treasures of the Departments, often with fascinating stories of how the collections finally arrived in the Museum's possession.
