Not only the great ecclesiastical
collections which are famous
throughout Hungary—such
as the Christian Museum
at Esztergom and the Jewish
Museum in Budapest—but also
many small parish churches house
quantities of valuable works of art.
Numerous paintings, statues,
illuminated manuscripts, tapestries
and, of course, liturgical objects,
too, are in the possession
of religious institutions. Apart from
a few items, however, the general
public is not acquainted with these
treasures. It is for the first time now
that, under the expert guidance
of Katalin Dávid, this fascinating
material can be studied
in book form. In addition
to the best-known paintings and a
small number of statues given here
only as examples, the objects of
applied arts, which constitute the
bulk of the ecclesiastical collections,
form the main subject of this work.
