Tliis book presents the findings of an extensive study of the top management practices of fifteen leading industrial corporations. It is, in large measure, a follow-up of a prior study conducted more than a quarter-century ago under the title Top Management Organization and Control. Fifteen principal areas of top management involvement were selected for investigation in depth. Typical areas include overall control, long-range planning, product line direction and control, international operations, management information systems, and development of executive personnel. The first chapter summarizes the results of the study and the conclusions reached. Each of the next ten chapters deals with one or more of the involvement areas setting forth the current best corporate practices being followed, highlighting the significant changes since the earlier study, and suggesting probable trends over the next decade.
