This is the first book
to describe in full detail
the attacks made from Malta in the Second World War. A glance at the map shows how vital the island was in any Mediterranean campaign. Had Malta fallen, Rommel would have had all the men, fuel and supplies he needed to take Egypt and to threaten the oil fields beyond. After the Allied victories in North Africa, Malta became the springboard for the invasion of Italy. Hitler spared nothing in his counter-attacks. To defend Italy he took U-boats from the Atlantic and whole air forces from Russia, and he moved a million troops from his Russian fronts. These actions fatally weakened the German war machine.
Tony Spooner, himself among the attackers, recounts the exploits of heroes such as Adrian Warburton and Patrick Gibbs in the air, and Captain Agnew of HMS Aurora and David Wanklyn VC on, and beneath, the sea. He also documents the key role that ULTRA intelligence played and adds an extra dimension by including the opinions expressed at the time by enemy leaders and the judgements of post-war German and Italian historians.
Although always too few in numbers, short of essentials and under unprecedented aerial bombardment, Allied sailors and airmen, ably supported by the Army and the Maltese, nevertheless made an invaluable contribution to Victory in Europe. Vissza
